Buy a Cocker Spaniel in the UK
When buying a Cocker Spaniel, decide whether you prefer a working or show type, as they differ significantly in energy levels and appearance. Both parents should be health-tested for progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA DNA test), familial nephropathy (FN DNA test), and have BVA hip scores and current eye certificates. For parti-colour Cockers, a hearing test (BAER) is also recommended. Visit the breeder to observe the puppies' temperament and meet the mother. Reputable breeders will be Kennel Club Assured or members of a Cocker Spaniel breed club.
