The Labrador Retriever consistently ranks as the UK's favourite dog breed. These friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions are versatile working dogs originally bred in Newfoundland to help fishermen. Labs come in three colours — black, yellow, and chocolate — and are renowned for their intelligence, making them excellent guide dogs, therapy dogs, and search-and-rescue workers.

Labradors are outgoing, kind, and trusting. They are one of the most even-tempered breeds, showing patience and gentleness with children. They are highly social and get along well with other animals. Labs are eager to please and respond exceptionally well to positive reinforcement training. They maintain a youthful enthusiasm throughout their lives.

Labradors are energetic dogs requiring at least 1-2 hours of vigorous exercise daily. They love swimming, retrieving games, and long countryside walks. Without sufficient exercise, they can become destructive and overweight. They are well-suited to active families and those who enjoy outdoor pursuits.

Their short, dense double coat is water-resistant and sheds heavily, especially during seasonal changes. Weekly brushing is sufficient most of the year, increasing to daily during shedding seasons. They should be bathed as needed, usually every 4-6 weeks. Regular ear cleaning is important as their floppy ears retain moisture.

Common health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, obesity, progressive retinal atrophy, and exercise-induced collapse. Labradors are particularly prone to weight gain, which can exacerbate joint problems. Responsible breeders test for hip scores, elbow scores, eye conditions, and CNM (centronuclear myopathy).

Portion control is critical for Labradors as they tend to overeat. Provide measured meals rather than free-feeding. Ensure regular exercise combining physical activity and mental stimulation such as training sessions and puzzle feeders. Annual vet check-ups should include weight monitoring and joint assessments. Early socialisation and puppy training classes establish good behaviour patterns.

When buying a Labrador puppy, look for breeders registered with the Kennel Club or a Labrador breed club. Both parents should have hip scores (breed average is 9), elbow scores (ideally 0:0), a clear eye certificate, and a CNM (centronuclear myopathy) DNA test. Visit the breeder to meet the mother and see the puppies' living conditions. Labradors come in three colours — black, yellow, and chocolate — and colour should never be prioritised over health. Be aware that 'silver' or 'charcoal' Labradors are controversial and not recognised by the UK Kennel Club.

Responsible Labrador breeders test for hip dysplasia (BVA/KC scheme, aiming below the breed mean of 9), elbow dysplasia (ideally 0:0), progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA DNA test), centronuclear myopathy (CNM DNA test), and exercise-induced collapse (EIC DNA test). Annual eye examinations should be current. Ask about the longevity and health history of the breeder's lines. Good breeders will match puppies to suitable homes based on temperament and energy levels, particularly distinguishing between working and show-type Labradors.
