The French Bulldog, or 'Frenchie', has become one of the UK's most popular breeds. These small, muscular dogs with their distinctive bat-like ears and flat faces are known for being affectionate, adaptable companions. Originally bred as miniature bulldogs in England, they gained popularity in France before becoming a worldwide favourite. Their compact size makes them ideal for city living.

French Bulldogs are playful, alert, and adaptable. They form strong bonds with their owners and are known for being particularly affectionate. They have a calm, easygoing nature but can be stubborn at times. Frenchies are generally good with children and other pets, making them excellent family dogs. They enjoy being the centre of attention and can be quite comical.

French Bulldogs require moderate exercise — around 30-60 minutes daily split into short walks. Due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) nature, they should not be over-exercised, especially in hot weather. Short play sessions and gentle walks are ideal. Avoid strenuous activity in warm conditions as they are prone to overheating.

Their short, smooth coat is relatively low maintenance, requiring weekly brushing to remove loose hair. Facial wrinkles must be cleaned regularly to prevent infections and irritation. Ears should be checked weekly, and nails trimmed monthly. They shed moderately and may need occasional bathing every 4-8 weeks.

French Bulldogs are prone to brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which can cause breathing difficulties. Other common issues include spinal disorders, allergies, eye conditions such as cherry eye, and joint problems. They often have difficulty regulating body temperature. Choose a breeder who health-tests breeding stock and avoids extreme facial shortening.

Keep your Frenchie at a healthy weight to reduce strain on their joints and breathing. Use a harness rather than a collar to protect their airways. Monitor them carefully in hot weather and provide air conditioning or cooling mats. Clean facial folds daily. Feed a high-quality diet in measured portions. Regular vet check-ups are essential, particularly for breathing and spinal assessments.

French Bulldogs require extra caution when buying due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) health risks. Only buy from breeders who health-test for BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome), spinal conditions, and eye problems. The Kennel Club's Respiratory Function Grading Scheme is a key indicator of a responsible breeder. Avoid puppies with extremely flat faces, pinched nostrils, or noisy breathing — these are signs of poor breeding. Ask to see the parents breathing normally during light exercise. A responsible French Bulldog breeder participates in the Kennel Club's Respiratory Function Grading Scheme and only breeds from dogs graded 0, 1, or 2. Ask about caesarean section rates — while common in the breed, good breeders work to reduce the need for surgical births. The breeder should demonstrate that both parents can breathe comfortably, exercise normally, and have open nostrils.
