As a crossbreed, Cockapoos are not recognised by the Kennel Club, so extra care is needed when choosing a breeder. Ensure both parent dogs are health-tested: the Cocker Spaniel parent for PRA (prcd-PRA), FN (familial nephropathy), and hip scores; the Poodle parent for PRA, hip scores, and eye tests. Ask which generation the puppies are (F1, F1b, F2, etc.) as this affects coat type and shedding. Visit the breeder to meet both parents if possible. Be cautious of breeders producing Cockapoos in large numbers — responsible breeders treat them with the same care as pedigree litters.
