The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, affectionately known as the 'Staffie', is a muscular, courageous breed with a famously gentle nature towards people. Bred in 19th-century Staffordshire, they have evolved from their fighting origins to become one of the UK's most popular and affectionate family dogs. The Kennel Club describes them as having a particular affinity for children.

Staffies are bold, fearless, and incredibly affectionate with their families. Often called the 'nanny dog', they are remarkably gentle and patient with children. They are people-oriented dogs that crave human companionship and attention. While friendly with people, some can be less tolerant of other dogs, so early socialisation is important.

Staffies are muscular, energetic dogs needing around 1-1.5 hours of exercise daily. They enjoy brisk walks, play sessions, and activities that challenge them physically and mentally. They are surprisingly agile and often enjoy agility courses. Their strong jaws mean they need durable toys for chewing and playing.

Their short, smooth coat is very low maintenance. A weekly brush with a rubber grooming mitt removes loose hair and keeps the coat glossy. Bathing is only needed when dirty. Regular dental care, nail trimming, and ear cleaning complete their grooming routine. They are a naturally clean breed.

Staffies can be prone to skin allergies, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and certain eye conditions including cataracts and persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV). L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L-2-HGA) and hereditary cataracts are breed-specific conditions breeders should test for.

Provide firm but fair training with positive reinforcement — Staffies respond poorly to harsh methods. Early socialisation with other dogs and diverse environments is essential. Monitor for skin irritation and allergies. Feed a high-protein diet suited to their muscular build. Keep them mentally stimulated with interactive toys and training. They are not suited to being left alone for long periods.

When buying a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, choose a breeder registered with the Kennel Club or a Staffie breed club. Both parents should be DNA-tested for L-2-HGA (L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria) and HC (hereditary cataracts), and have BVA hip scores. Meet the mother to assess temperament — Staffies should be confident, friendly with people, and not nervous or aggressive. Be cautious of breeders who advertise 'blue' or 'XL' Staffies at premium prices, as these may not be purebred Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Responsible breeders prioritise the breed's famously gentle temperament.

Responsible Staffordshire Bull Terrier breeders DNA-test for L-2-HGA and hereditary cataracts (HC-HSF4), both of which are breed-specific conditions. Hip scoring through the BVA/KC scheme is also recommended. Ask about the temperament of the breeder's dogs — the breed standard describes them as 'totally reliable' and having a particular affinity for children. Good breeders socialise puppies with people of all ages, other dogs, and various environments. They should be transparent about the breed's history and provide guidance on responsible ownership and socialisation.
