The Miniature Dachshund is a small but spirited breed known for its distinctive elongated body and short legs. Originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers, these brave little dogs have a personality far larger than their size suggests. They come in three coat varieties — smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired — and a wide range of colours and patterns.

Miniature Dachshunds are clever, lively, and courageous. They are loyal to their families and can be surprisingly stubborn for their size. They are alert watchdogs who will bark at unfamiliar sounds. While affectionate with their owners, they can be wary of strangers. They have a strong prey drive and may chase small animals.

Despite their small size, Dachshunds are active dogs needing around 30-60 minutes of exercise daily. Short walks and play sessions suit them well. Avoid activities involving jumping or climbing stairs excessively, as their long spine makes them vulnerable to back injuries. Supervised garden play and gentle walks on flat ground are ideal.

Grooming needs vary by coat type. Smooth-haired Dachshunds need minimal grooming — a weekly brush suffices. Long-haired varieties require brushing several times a week to prevent tangles. Wire-haired Dachshunds need hand-stripping 2-3 times per year. All types benefit from regular nail trimming and dental care.

The most significant health risk is intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) due to their elongated spine. Other concerns include patella luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, and obesity. Maintaining a healthy weight is critical to reducing spinal stress. Choose breeders who screen for IVDD and PRA.

Keep your Dachshund at a lean weight to protect their spine. Use ramps instead of allowing them to jump on and off furniture. Support their back when picking them up. Feed a controlled, balanced diet. Provide moderate exercise on flat surfaces. Early socialisation helps manage their natural wariness of strangers. Consistent, patient training works best with this independent breed.

When buying a Miniature Dachshund, spinal health should be your top priority. Ask breeders about IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) screening and whether they participate in the Dachshund Breed Council's health schemes. Both parents should have clear eye tests and be DNA-tested for PRA (cord1 and cord2) and lafora disease (in miniature wire-haired). Choose puppies with moderate body proportions — extremely long backs and very short legs increase IVDD risk. Visit the breeder to see the parents move freely and check they are in good physical condition.

Responsible Miniature Dachshund breeders test for progressive retinal atrophy (cord1 PRA DNA test), lafora disease (in wire-haired varieties), and conduct annual eye examinations. They should be aware of IVDD risk and breed for moderate proportions. Ask about the incidence of back problems in their lines.
