The German Shepherd is a versatile, intelligent working breed recognised worldwide for its loyalty, courage, and ability to learn complex tasks. Originally developed in Germany for herding sheep, they are now one of the most widely used breeds for police, military, search-and-rescue, and assistance work. Their noble appearance and unwavering devotion make them exceptional family protectors.

German Shepherds are confident, courageous, and smart. They are deeply loyal to their families and can be aloof with strangers until properly introduced. They are highly trainable and thrive when given a job to do. With proper socialisation, they are gentle with children and can coexist with other pets. They are natural guardians with strong protective instincts.

German Shepherds are high-energy dogs requiring at least 1.5-2 hours of exercise daily. They need both physical activity and mental stimulation — long walks, runs, training sessions, and working activities like tracking or agility. Without sufficient exercise and mental engagement, they can develop destructive behaviours.

Their medium-length double coat sheds heavily, especially during spring and autumn. Brush at least 2-3 times per week, daily during shedding seasons. Bathe every 6-8 weeks or as needed. Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care are important. They are sometimes called 'German Shedders' for good reason.

Common concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, bloat (GDV), and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Some lines are prone to allergies and skin conditions. Responsible breeders test for hip and elbow scores, DM gene status, and haemophilia. Choose breeders focused on health and temperament over extreme angulation.

Provide structured daily exercise and training. German Shepherds excel with clear leadership and consistent rules. Early socialisation is critical to prevent over-guarding or nervousness. Feed a high-quality large-breed diet and monitor for bloat by avoiding exercise around mealtimes. Invest in obedience training from an early age — they are eager learners who thrive with positive methods.

When buying a German Shepherd, prioritise breeders who focus on health and temperament over extreme conformation. Both parents should have BVA hip and elbow scores (breed average hip score is 11), be DNA-tested for degenerative myelopathy (DM), and have current eye certificates. Choose breeders who produce dogs with a level topline and good rear angulation — avoid exaggerated sloping backs. Meet both parents if possible to assess temperament, as nervousness and aggression can be inherited. Working-line and show-line German Shepherds differ significantly in drive and energy levels.

Responsible German Shepherd breeders test for hip dysplasia (BVA/KC scheme, aiming below the breed mean of 11), elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy (DM DNA test), and haemophilia A. Annual eye examinations should be current. Ask about the temperament of the breeder's lines — good temperament is as important as physical health. Breeders should demonstrate that their dogs are confident, stable, and not nervous or aggressive. They should socialise puppies extensively and begin basic training before they go to new homes.
