The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a graceful, gentle toy breed with a regal history dating back to the courts of King Charles II. Known for their large, expressive eyes and silky, flowing coat, Cavaliers are the perfect lap dog that also enjoys moderate activity. They come in four recognised colour patterns: Blenheim, tricolour, black and tan, and ruby.

Cavaliers are affectionate, gentle, and graceful. They are adaptable dogs that are equally happy curled up on the sofa or enjoying a walk in the park. They are excellent with children and other pets, and their sweet nature makes them wonderful therapy dogs. They crave companionship and do not do well when left alone for long periods.

Cavaliers need around 30-60 minutes of exercise daily. They enjoy walks, gentle play, and exploring gardens. While they are not as high-energy as working spaniels, they retain enough sporting instinct to enjoy fetch and short hikes. They adapt well to their owner's activity level.

Their silky, medium-length coat requires brushing 3-4 times per week to prevent tangles, particularly behind the ears, on the chest, and on the feathering of the legs. Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks keeps the coat in good condition. Regular ear cleaning is essential due to their long, pendulous ears.

Cavaliers are unfortunately prone to several serious conditions, most notably mitral valve disease (a heart condition), syringomyelia (a neurological condition affecting the brain and spine), hip dysplasia, and eye conditions including cataracts. It is critical to choose a breeder who performs cardiac, MRI, eye, and hip evaluations on breeding stock.

Ensure annual cardiac screenings from age one. Feed a balanced diet to maintain a healthy weight. Provide moderate daily exercise and mental stimulation. Keep their coat well-groomed and ears clean to prevent infections. Cavaliers are sensitive dogs that respond best to gentle, positive training methods. Never use harsh corrections.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require particularly careful breeder selection due to their predisposition to serious health conditions. Both parents must have current heart certificates (ideally clear at age 5+), MRI scans for syringomyelia, eye tests, and hip scores.
